The following formula is a
genereal guide to establish the approximate length of rope that will fit onto a
reel or drum. This formula is based on a uniform wind with the same quantity of
wraps per layer. |

The formula is : (A + D) x A x B
x K = L
A = Depth of outside edge of the flange to
the drum B = Width of drum between flanges D = Drum Diameter K = The
constant for the rope diameter (see table below) L = The length of rope in
feet |
The formula below uses the following reel and wire
dimensions. A
= 10",B = 20",D = 18", the wire rope diameter is 1/2" so K =
0.925 |
would be
calculated as follows (10 + 18) x 10 x 20 x 0.925 = 5,180 ft.
